Wine and Dine at the Island

Nov 29, 2019 Notes from a Chef

At Milaidhoo Island Maldives we appreciate our chefs’ culinary creations by pairing them with the great iconic wines and champagnes we source from the best wineries from all over the world. We invite wine makers from Europe, Australia, South Africa, as well as Sake makers from Japan to visit Milaidhoo, to present their fine wines to our guests and to share their stories from the wine mountains.

We have several wine dinners a year and this November we welcomed Eduardo Muga Pena from the Bodegas Muga, Haro, in Spain’s Rioja Alta wine region. Eduardo belongs to one of the most important wine families in Spain whose philosophy of wine making evolves around tradition, dynamism, and producing wine of the highest quality. Bodegas Muga was founded in Haro in 1932 and is still in family ownership; the company farms 250 hectares in La Rioja Alta and has longstanding contracts with the owners of another 150 hectares of grapes.

For the wine dinner in Milaidhoo’s Shoreline Grill, Eduardo and our resident sommelier presented five exquisite wines from the Bodegas including award winning ‘Muga Rioja Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2011’ (3rd place of the top 100 wines of the year of James Suckling) to our guests, paired with culinary joys such as fine shellfish, confit quail, tender ostrich and marvellous Wagyu beef, concluding with a delightful cheese tasting.

A note from our sommelier: “On the 23rd of November myself and all our valuable guest have witnessed a fabulous culinary experienced with one of the world’s most renowned winery Muga from Rioja, Spain. Mr. Eduardo Muga Pena was humble enough to share remarkable stories behind the most coveted and highly rated wines of the Muga winery while chefs has prepared the heavenly matched dishes with each represented wines.”

“Wine is the only artwork you can drink” – Luis Fernando Olaverri.

Guests of Milaidhoo Island Maldives are always welcome to explore the treasures of our wine room and enjoy a personal wine tasting session with our sommelier team, or to create their own wine and dine experience with the assistance of our chefs and wine specialists.
