Unlocking the Secrets of the Maldives Climate

Jun 10, 2024 Stories of a Small Island

If you are dreaming of being ensconsed in secluded bliss on a small island without hordes of other people, and having your every whim satisfied, then the Maldives, and more specifically Milaidhoo is where you need to be. Understanding the Maldives’ climate will help you choose the perfect time to visit this Indian Ocean paradise. Here’s the scoop on when exactly you should visit.

Enjoy Year Round Warm Weather

As the Maldives is located near the equator, the archipelago islands enjoy a wonderful tropical climate and get loads of sunshine year round. Throughout the year, the weather is generally hot and humid with temperatures ranging between 24°C to 30°C, dropping only slightly at night when the minimum temperature falls no lower than 22°C. On average from January to March the Maldives experiences 10 to 11 hours of sunshine daily! And from April to February you can expect to enjoy 7 to 9 hours of sunlight.

Indian Ocean Tropical Waters

Water surface temperatures range between 24°C and 27°C , ideal for swimming in the calm turquoise lagoon, snorkelling around the house reef and scuba diving in a resort in Baa Atoll.

You’ll be Walking on Sunshine during the Dry Season

Sunseekers will love the dry season, from November to April in the Maldives. During this period  you can expect clear, cloudless skies and plenty of sunshine. Making it the perfect time to enjoy Milaidhoo’s white powdery beach, embark on a Dhoni sunset cruise, go dolphin spotting and stay overnight on a private sandbank, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Expect Occasional Showers during the Wet Season

May to October is the official rainy season in the Maldives but don’t let the weather deter you as there are plenty of things to do in Maldives for couples. On the whole, you can expect only occasional showers and Milaidhoo offers a wide range of rainy day activities such as being pampered at the spa, learning to cook local dishes with a Maldivian chef, practising yoga poses undercover at our yoga pavilion, making cocktails during a mixology masterclass and enjoying a sommelier wine tasting in Maldives.

Generally, October is the wettest month of the season when you will experience torrential downpours. The upside of the Wet Season is that you’ll enjoy reduced prices with fantastic Maldives luxury vacation packages and what’s more –  it’s Manta season.

The Best Time to Visit for Scuba Diving

Even though scuba diving is possible all year round, the best time to go diving in the Baa Atoll is from June to October and December to March when you will enjoy good visibility. From May to August, during the wet season visibility is decreased, however this is when you will see a marked increase in manta ray and whale shark sightings. Which makes this period a wonderful time to visit as you’ll have the opportunity to swim alongside these incredible underwater creatures.
