Hello there, Octopus!

Feb 09, 2018 Ocean Stories

We were happy to run into this beautiful octopus while diving recently. Snorkelling or diving, seeing an octopus is always an excitement for everyone, and this time was no exception. This video shows you how incredibly good they are at changing their skin colour and shape to fit into their surroundings.

While on one of our regular turtle-spotting expeditions near Milaidhoo Island Maldives, our guests not only saw turtles but also had the opportunity to see this beautiful octopus “dancing” around the coral reef.

With their eight long arms, octopuses swim backwards by blasting water through a muscular tube on the body called a siphon. However, we can also see them crawling along the ocean’s floor, tucking their arms into small openings to search for food.

Did you know that octopuses:

  • have three hearts and blue blood?
  • squirt ink to deter predators?
  • are boneless and can squeeze into (or out of) tight spaces?
  • can change to gray, brown, pink, blue or green to blend in with its surroundings or as a way to communicate with other octopuses?
